Emily Warren Roebling, "The Woman Who Saved The Brooklyn Bridge," was a builder and businesswoman who was largely responsible for guiding construction of the Brooklyn Bridge after its chief engineer (her husband) fell ill and couldn't complete the job. She would become the first person to cross the bridge, too — carrying a rooster with her, as the story has it, for good luck.
